MATURA EARTHQUAKE 1803

   

A very violent earthquake occurred on 1 September 1803 and lasted several minutes. Very severe at Mathura, many pukka buildings were thrown down, very extensive fissures in fields, through which water rose with considerable violence and in quantity sufficient to be used by cultivators. Principal mosques were destroyed and a considerable part of the dome was swallowed up during the opening of the earth. Severe in Simla-Kumaon hills. Damaged the Qutub minar at Delhi. Felt at Calcutta. Several aftershocks were followed. Based on the description, the maximum MM intensity is assumed to be IX and its epicentral location is 27.5N, 77.7E ( Oldham 1883).
