On 23rd March, 1839 Amarapoora was visited by a great earthquake. Several aftershocks were followed for about six months. In several places great earth fissures were produced 10 to 20 ft., from which large quantities of water and gray earth were thrown out, emitting a sulfurous smell. According to Oldham, (1883), the places in Amarapoora like Ava and Tsagain were destroyed completely. and 200 to 300 persons were killed. Based on the description of felt reports, the maximum MM intensity is XI and its epicentral location is 21.9N, 96.0E.
