BENGAL EARTHQUAKE 1885 AD

   

The great Bengal earthquake of 14th July 1885, was studied by Middlemiss(1885). It was felt with violence throughout the province. More devastation is bounded by Mymensing, Comilla and Sirajgunj. The earthquake affects extended Westwards upto Chotanagapur and Bihar, Northwards into Sikkim and Bhutan Eastwards into Assam, Manipur and Burma. The shock was felt with such considerable violence as to shake loose objects, rattle windows and produce small cracks in double storied houses. Dacca and Pabna, where distraction to buildings was greatest and loss life had occurred. Based on the felt reports, the great earthquake of Bengal may be having a maximum MM intensity of IX and its epicentral location is at Manickgunj, 25.0N, 92.2E.
